As the World Burns
Humans are the most populous race on Athas, particularly in the city-states where they dwarf the other races in numbers. Their resiliency and drive have made the uniquely able to adapt to the harsh conditions in the wastes. Physically they are diverse, ranging from the bronze skin tones and dark straight hair of the people of Draj to dark brown skin and thick curly black hair of those from Gulg. The ravages of magic have left their mark on humans, with many displaying unusual traits such as rare eye color, lack of body hair or elongated limbs.
Humans occupy every strata of the social order in the city-states, where they have been able to thrive under the rule of the sorcerer-kings. In addition to positions as nobles, free citizens, merchants and landowners, humans also form the majority of the templars. Outside the cities, the human population falls off, but they are still common even in the deep wastes.
Humanity is without a past – the sorcerer-kings have destroyed or secured written histories and prohibited the creation of any, and created new tales where they are depicted as saviors, gods or champions who have saved the world. Stories are still told in the villages of local events, but on a whole humans do not know where they come from.
